Return to Sender

Beginner: By HoXrds

A Return to Sender spell is a protective working used to send harmful, unwanted, or negative energy back to where it came from.

It is commonly used when someone feels they are receiving jealousy, ill will, gossip, evil eye, spiritual attack, manipulation, or energy that does not belong to them. The purpose is not always to curse another person. In many practices, it is understood as a boundary spell. It says, “What is not mine cannot stay with me.”

At its core, a Return to Sender working is about spiritual defense. It reflects the energy back instead of absorbing it. The practitioner is not trying to chase, beg, or battle the source. They are closing access, reclaiming peace, and refusing to carry what was sent toward them.

What You Need

  • Tea Light Candle

  • Sewing Needle or Toothpick

  • A safe, fireproof surface or candle holder

Before you begin, take a few deep breaths and ground yourself. Sit still and allow your body to become calm. This working should not be done from panic or rage. The purpose is not to attack. The purpose is to return what does not belong to you.

Write Return to Sender on the tea light candle or on the outside of the tea light cup. As you write it, focus on the energy you are releasing. You do not need to name a person unless your practice calls for that. You can simply focus on the negativity, tension, evil eye, ill will, or unwanted energy that has been directed toward you.

Place the tea light in a safe holder and light it.
(ex: candle holder, aluminum pan, bowl with a small amount of water in the bottom NEVER LEAVE A CANDLE UN ATTENDED!)

As the flame burns, close your eyes and begin meditating on the energy you no longer wish to carry. Imagine all of the tension, heaviness, fear, jealousy, gossip, or spiritual pressure being pulled from your body and gathered into the center of the candle.

Breathe slowly.

With each inhale, recognize what is not yours.

With each exhale, release it into the flame.

You may say:

“What is not mine cannot stay with me.
What was sent with harm, envy, or ill will is returned to its source.
I release this energy calmly, clearly, and completely.
My spirit is protected. My peace is restored. My path is closed to what does not belong.”

Let the candle burn down fully while you remain present. Do not leave the candle unattended.
If you need to walk away, snuff it out safely and return to the working later.

As the candle finishes, imagine the negativity dissolving, lifting, and leaving your space. Do not hold onto it. Do not chase it. Do not obsess over who sent it. Simply release it. When the candle is completely out and the holder has cooled, dispose of the remains properly and respectfully. If the tea light cup is aluminum and clean enough to recycle, recycle it according to your local rules. If wax remains, remove what you can and place the wax in the trash. Do not pour wax down the sink. Do not bury aluminum, plastic, glass, or synthetic materials in the earth.

After disposal, wash your hands, drink water, and ground yourself. You may cleanse the space with sound, smoke, prayer, or simply by opening a window.

This working reminds us that protection does not always need to be complicated. Sometimes it is breath, flame, intention, and the refusal to carry what was never yours.
